How It Works

Book a free consultation

Contact the clinical director to book an initial free 30 minute consultation. During this consultation, the clinical director answers any questions about the therapy and services and provides an initial service plan. If parents wish to proceed, we schedule in a comprehensive assessment.

Individualized assessments

At our first in-person visit we will explain the service agreement and get consent and signatures. On the same visit, an Initial Comprehensive Assessment is conducted.

Comprehensive Assessments take between one hour and one hour and a half. This can be done virtually or in-person. During this assessment the clinical director asks questions about the history of the person, their medical profile, likes and dislikes, diagnosis, current and previous placement, priority goals and expectations.

The clinical director will then decide what follow-up assessments (Direct Assessments) will be the best fit for the child, depending on the age, abilities, and goals. We will book in-person appointments for these assessments.

Direct Assessments are evidence-based. These may take a few visits, depending on how the child responds. Sometimes we begin with a Functional Behaviour Assessment (to treat problem behaviours) before administering the other skill-based assessments.

Family & pairing sessions

The instructor therapist is introduced to the child and family. Pairing sessions are scheduled, which are considered the first cornerstone in the therapy process. They are very crucial to build rapport with the child and establish trust. If there is not rapport between the therapist and the child, therapy will not be successful.

Goals established & therapy begins

The clinical director creates the assessment report and the behaviour plan. This includes all the goals as discussed with parents. This could take between 2 to 3 weeks.

The instructor will meet with parents to share the assessment results and agree on the goals moving forward. Weekly therapy sessions are set up and we begin teaching protocols if the instructor and the child are both ready.

The clinical director or the BCBA will do regular supervision visits to check the progress and to provide immediate feedback and program revisions as needed.

FAQs

  • The assessment is a very crucial part of the therapy process. The assessment guides the therapy goals and helps the clinician track the child’s progress.

  • Skill building is a long-term and gradual process that takes time. Progress speed varies depending on different factors: number of hours per week, parent’s involvement and adherence to the clinician’s recommendations and written protocols, medical and health issues impacting the therapy, and history and severity of problem behaviour.

We measure progress for each skill separately, and sometimes we see progress in areas that we did not teach explicitly. Throughout the therapy sessions, the clinician will do regular evaluations of any environmental factors that could be impacting the progress.

The clinician will provide monthly progress reports and will share those in person with parents.

  • Unfortunately, no. There is no cure for autism, however, a good momentum with ABA therapy and other disciplines (speech therapy, occupational therapy, good support at school) for a long period of time helps in improving the skill set of the child over time. In other words, ABA therapy improves the quality of life of the child by addressing their skill deficit that usually hinder their inclusion.

  • ABA therapy sessions look different for each child depending on what we are teaching. For instance, some programs are conducted during play in the child’s environment, some programs are conducted outdoor if there is a safe backyard, some programs are conducted in the kitchen. if we are teaching cooking or meal prep, some programs are conducted at the table to teach hands-on activities and basic attending and visual perceptual skills.

Session length is usually 2 hours including 10-15 minutes break.

  • Absolutely, after getting the parent’s written consent we can attend school meetings, IEP meetings, and meetings with other professionals supporting the child.
