One to One Therapy for Children

Behaviour Avenues supports children with autism in London, Ontario, and surrounding areas with individualized ABA therapy. One-to-one children's therapy sessions are offered in the child’s home or in nearby community settings, or virtually when applicable.

  • Initial comprehensive assessments are conducted, followed by direct assessments with the child depending on the child’s age and abilities. These assessments are for behaviour reduction and skill building.

What does an ABA session look like for children?

Set up and preparation

The instructor therapist and the clinical supervisor prepare the therapy room/space in the client’s home. This usually requires a table with 2 chairs, a cabinet with a lock to store therapy material, program material and toys used during therapy.

The therapy session

The first couple of sessions are dedicated to building a good rapport with the child. If the child doesn’t feel comfortable with the instructor we cannot begin therapy. Rapport building and pairing is the cornerstone of the therapy process.

● Session length is usually 2 hours, broken down into different tasks and includes a break (10 to 15 minutes). During the break time, the therapist will work on documentation and data collection and preparing material to teach the next programs. Some programs are taught at the table, and some others are taught during play.

● Throughout the therapy session, we honour the client’s needs by teaching them how to ask for what they need, even if they need multiple breaks. We do not use hands- on (no carrying or restraining ). During therapy you will see the instructors using a variety of toys and fun games that the client likes. We make the session a fun time so that the child learns when they are happy.

● Therapy is not exclusive within the therapy room, we teach where the child needs to use that skill. For example, if we are teaching safety or turn taking, we plan for therapy sessions in a nearby park during times where parents are available to join and learn how we are teaching. If we are teaching functional living skills, we teach in the kitchen or in the bathroom or any other place in the client’s environment

Documentation and progress tracking

We track the program effectiveness on each skill by collecting data and monitoring the progress with graphs. For instance, at the beginning of therapy, we record the duration of time the child can sit and attend to the instructor, and after a few sessions we look at the duration charts. Our kiddos usually start with as low as 5 seconds of ability to focus and they reach up to 45 minutes of continuous attending and focusing on instruction without problem behaviour. We celebrate each millstone with the child and the parents. All teaching protocols and data sheets are kept in a binder in a secure place in the clients’ home.

One to One Therapy for Adults & Adolescents

Behaviour Avenues supports adults aged 18 and up in London, Ontario, and surrounding areas. Adult therapy sessions are delivered in the client’s home or in community settings.

  • We conduct different types of skill-tracking systems and curriculums to determine the skill deficits and plan for treatment goals accordingly.

  • Our skill-budling sessions teach functional living skills such as:
    • making a meal
    • using money
    • using technology
    • doing chores
    • personal hygiene
    • goal setting
    • healthy lifestyle
    • self-regulation
    • functional communication
    • self regulation skills

An instructor therapist will work closely with the client (hours depend on the budget).

Therapy sessions usually take place in the client’s home as well as in the community (eg. grocery store, public library, taking the bus).

Common Challenges

Self-injurious behaviour

We help with self-injurous behaviours, such as self-biting, pulling own hair, skin picking, eating inedible items, and head banging.

Aggression

ABA Therapy helps with physical and verbal aggression towards others or property.

Non-cooperation

We assist with strategies for tantrums and non-cooperation.

Inappropriate behaviours

We support children and adults with social skills and contextually inappropriate behaviours.

Treatment of Challenging Behaviours

  • A functional behaviour assessment is conducted to identify the causes of the behaviour. This entails answering questionnaires about the frequency, intensity, duration of the behaviour, and what it looks like. It also involves data collection to understand in which context these behaviours occur (ABC data or Antecedent, Behaviour, Consequence).

  • The clinical supervisor analyzes the data and the results of the questionnaire to Develop a Behavioural Support Plan that addresses the challenging behaviour.

The Behaviour support plan includes details about the behavioural strategies and the teaching process. Ongoing data collection is also required throughout this process to evaluate the effectiveness of the intervention.

The Clinical supervisor works closely with parents and caregivers to train them on maintaining the intervention gains over time.

Parent Coaching & Training

We support parents and caregivers with coaching and consultative services. We also offer student placements and clinical supervision, ABA training for schools, community agencies or companies.

  • For private schools, community agencies, daycares, businesses, and families.

  • We offer ongoing parent training and coaching to ensure the skills are transferred to different people and settings.

  • If funding is not available for a long-term commitment, we offer short-term consultative services that fit your needs.

  • Consultation about any topic or behaviour of concern.

  • This program targets siblings who engage in challenging behaviours during their daily interactions increasing the level of stress at home. This clinic is a combination of parent coaching and direct intervention with siblings. The BCBA conducts an assessment with parents and observes siblings during play in the clinic.
